In his book Orientalism, Edward Said, the 20s century social critic talks about the two opposites sides: xenophilia, which is the obsession and fantasy towards the extotic east; and xenophobia, which is the fear towards the eastern culture. Xenos in the context of this exhibition is drawn away from the context of colonialism behind Said’s point of view. Xenos here literally means the unknown / unfamiliar / foreign in Greek.

You need to confirm the known by looking for the unknown. The unknown represents the subconscious mind in the human brain in Freud's theory. Xenos is the presentation of the subconscious in our consciousness. Through dreams, they become visible pictures and interspersed with our impressions of the real world in our memory. It’s shadow of memory that exists in the third space.

The art movements Dadaism and Surrealism, which originated at the beginning of the last century, were derived from the development of neurology and psychology - Vienna neuroscientists, headed by Freud, began to pay attention to human psychological activities, so It triggers artists to explore topics related to the subconscious in the field of visual art. Xenos presents works by three artists - Yolanda Y Liou (b.1990), Yage Guo (b.1998), and Yushi Li (b.1991).

Xenos' exhibition has three meanings, the subconsciousness, the European Chinese identity, and due to the exhibiting of all female artists, it adds another feminist layer to its contemporaries.
